Back in 1982 the coming-of-age film Fast Times at Ridgemont
High hit screens, and with it exposed what exactly was going on in the brains
of hormonal teens in the early '80s.
The film was Amy Heckerling's directorial debut, and it
contains many classic scenes still referenced today, with a cast who went on to
become massive stars. However, the movie contains one scene in particular which
became a fantasy for teenage boys across the world: When Phoebe Cates performed
her iconic bikini drop.
33 years after that scene debuted, it is still remembered as
the most memorable bikini-drop in cinema history, but whatever happened to
Phoebe Cates?
Phoebe Cates was always destined for acting, born to a
family of television and Broadway production insiders, she attended the
Juilliard School with dreams of becoming a dancer. When she suffered a knee
injury at age 15, Cates instead began a career as a model. After tiring of the
repetition of modeling, the now 19-year-old tried her hand at acting, where she
seemed to find her niche.
Cates' first film was Paradise, a film with a plot similar
to the 1980 Brooke Shields movie The Blue Lagoon. Although she reportedly did
not enjoy filming the movie, she has said that her next movie, Fast Times at
Ridgemont High, was the most fun to film.
In 2005 the actress took an even bigger step away from the
cameras when she opened her own boutique on New York's Madison Avenue called
Blue Tree. Her dream was to "have it be like a general store but according
to me," and over the years the small store has built up a loyal following.
